On average, Conservation Authorities plant more than 2M trees annually through their various tree planting programs and stewardship initiatives. This work helps to mitigate climate change by moderating the effects of drought and flooding, reducing soil erosion, reducing GHGs, sequestering carbon, providing habitat for wildlife, creating recreational opportunities, and providing an essential economic resource.

Lower Trent Conservation advises municipalities and the public that a Flood Watch Statement has been
issued for the Trent River (Hastings to Trenton). It is important to note that during this time, high water levels, unsafe banks or other factors could be dangerous for recreational users and waterfront land owners. Nuisance or minor flooding of roads, backyards, basements etc., for some may occur.

Significant rainfall in the Trent River watershed during the tail end of March and over the past two weeks in April have led to increased flows and water levels on the Trent-Severn Waterway. Additionally, weather
forecasts indicate periods of rain resulting in approximately 20 to 35mm of rain over the next five days. Parks Canada – Ontario Waterways (Trent Severn Waterway) will be making adjustments at water control structures to accommodate the rainfall that was received in the Trent River watershed. The majority of the watershed is experiencing saturated ground conditions due to the large rainfall volumes observed over the past few weeks, which will lead to increased runoff into the Trent River through the local creeks and streams. Increased flows and water levels are expected locally over the next few weeks.

While the potential dangers presented by rivers, small streams and open ditches never cease to exist, they
are of particular concern during these spring freshet conditions. Water currents could be strong and
temperatures are still cold. Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children and pets away from all
waterways. Areas around dams, culverts and bridges should be avoided at all times.

Lower Trent Conservation monitors water levels and weather forecasts closely as part of its flood forecasting and warning program. Daily water level updates are available at www.LTC.on.ca.
