On average, Conservation Authorities plant more than 2M trees annually through their various tree planting programs and stewardship initiatives. This work helps to mitigate climate change by moderating the effects of drought and flooding, reducing soil erosion, reducing GHGs, sequestering carbon, providing habitat for wildlife, creating recreational opportunities, and providing an essential economic resource.

Looking Back: Highlights from Lower Trent Conservation’s 2024 Annual Report 

Lower Trent Conservation (LTC) is proud to share the highlights from a successful 2024. From environmental protection work to innovative outreach initiatives and exciting new projects, this past year marked some very important milestones. “This past year has truly shown what we can accomplish when we work together—with our municipal partners, dedicated staff, volunteers, and the community. 2024 Highlights 

Flood and Safety Improvements 
With funding from the Community Emergency Preparedness Grant, LTC installed four new precipitation gauges and upgraded all existing ones—enhancing our ability to monitor and warn communities about potential flooding. 

Conservation Science 
A groundbreaking pilot project to assess Brook Trout populations using underwater video was launched across 110 sites, laying the groundwork for future aquatic health monitoring and restoration. 

 Trail Stewards Program 
Introduced in 2024, this volunteer initiative empowered community members to help monitor trail conditions and enhance public safety in conservation areas. The program was met with enthusiastic participation and will continue to grow. 

Youth Engagement & Education 
927 students took part in the Tri-County Children’s Water Festival, and hundreds more benefited from in-class programming and library outreach sessions, learning the importance of environmental protection and clean drinking water. 

Planning & Permitting 
The team reviewed over 200 Planning Act applications and resolved 29 enforcement files, ensuring responsible development and the protection of environmentally sensitive areas.
