Lower Trent Conservation advises municipalities and the public that a Watershed Conditions Statement –Water Safety has been issued for the local creeks within the Lower Trent Watershed region (area stretching from Grafton to Quinte West and from Lake Ontario to Rice Lake and east to Centre Hastings). It is important to note that during this time high water levels, unsafe banks or other factors could be dangerous for recreational users and waterfront landowners. Although flooding is not expected, localized inundation of low-lying and poorly drained areas may be possible. 

Water levels throughout our local creeks and streams are approximately at the summertime average. A low-pressure system and it’s associated cold front will pass through the region starting Monday evening and lasting into Thursday morning. The system is expected to bring significant precipitation into the southern portion of the province. Current forecasts indicate that rainfall amounts between 35 and 55 mm are expected through the time period. There is potential for additional rainfall in isolated areas due to thunderstorm activity, and intense periods of rain. 

The forecasted rainfall will result in higher-than-normal water levels and flows along the smaller creeks and streams in the region, which can respond quickly to intense periods of rainfall, rising quickly. 

Municipalities and the public should be aware that localized inundation is possible in urban areas where storm drains may not be able to handle the intense rainfall associated with summer storms. 

The public is urged to exercise caution around all watercourses due to strong currents. Areas around dams, culverts and bridges should be avoided at all times. Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children away from all waterways.
