CONSERVATION ONTARIO ENCOURAGED BY MOVE TOWARDS MANDATORY SOURCE PROTECTION PLANNING FOR ONTARIO

NEWMARKET – Conservation Authorities are encouraged by the government’s move today to make source protection planning mandatory in watersheds throughout the province.

“The White Paper on Watershed-Based Source Protection Planning released by the province outlines a detailed approach to getting source protection plans underway in a timely manner,” said Peter Krause, Chair of Conservation Ontario.

Conservation Authorities are committed to working together with other stakeholders in the development of source protection plans. “We are very willing partners who have always acknowledged the importance of a collaborative approach in watershed management, especially at the local level,” said the Chair.

Conservation Authorities will also provide the technical expertise on which Source Protection Planning Committees can make effective recommendations about source protection in Ontario. Technical information needs to be collected and continually updated in order to accurately assess the state of a watershed and identify high risk or vulnerable areas.

“Conservation Authorities are ready to get on with the job,” said Krause. “We are developing innovative approaches and partnerships between CAs in order to prepare for this enhanced leadership role.”

Conservation Ontario participates on two of the province’s source water protection committees: the Implementation Committee and the Technical Expert Committee. Both will provide advice to the government on tools and approaches to implement watershed-based source protection planning.

Conservation Ontario represents Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities who are responsible for managing the province’s water resources on a watershed basis.
